Empty chairs await conversations, people and moments. Layla Gysin presents nine different chairs in a
serial format on beer mats. They evoke spaces for waiting, lingering and gathering. The chair is not
merely a piece of furniture; it is a silent bearer of memories and potential encounters. What is lost
when we do not speak? What remains of a conversation once the person has left?
The back of each coaster is inscribed with a handwritten question from the artist. These questions are
intended to start poetic conversations and are reminiscent of night-time doodles, exchanged phone
numbers and words between strangers and confidants. Despite the serial visual language, it is
precisely through the handwriting that each beer coaster becomes unique. The work addresses the
loss and discovery of language and interpersonal connection. Some words are lost, some remain and
others are rediscovered. Thus, a tribute emerges to conversations that have taken place, those that are
currently unfolding, and those that are still possible. It is an invitation to sit down, linger and allow the
lost to become visible for a moment.
